About Us

At First Baptist Church of Central City, KY, our mission is to have LTE coverage over Muhlenberg County. LTE stands for Loving Jesus, Telling Others About Jesus, and Equipping People to Follow Jesus

Our vision is that every single person in Central City, and in the wider Muhlenberg County community, would know Jesus Christ personally. We believe the Biblical teaching that all people are born into sin (a condition brought on by humanity’s rejection of God) and that God, out of His great love for us, came in the flesh in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, died on a cross so that we might receive forgiveness of sins, and bodily rose from the dead defeating evil, sin, and death so that we might have eternal life. Jesus gives us new life that is joyful, abundant, and everlasting, and we desire that all people would share in that life. As sinful people ourselves, we recognize that we are imperfect, but with God’s grace we strive to follow Jesus and be obedient to Him so that He might be glorified and others might know Him and the power of His resurrection.

Our Church History

In the spring of 1878 a revival meeting was held, conducted by Elders W.P. Bennett and D.L.K. Maddox. As a result of this meeting, a scattered group of pioneer families formed the United Baptist Church in Central City, KY, with a charter membership of 15 believers.

The first services were held on the second floor of the Galilee school near what is now West Second Street. The first pastor was Rev. Kelly Maddox, who served the church for about eight years. On May 22nd, 1890, a lot at Third and Morehead Streets was conveyed to the United Baptist Church by a deed signed by George L. Williamson and his wife to S.C. Gish, J.S. Hill, and J. Ham Helsley, the church’s trustees. In 1894, the first brick church was built under the leadership of Rev. R.H. Brengle. This church would later become what we know today as First Baptist Church, Central City.

Desiring to continue the tradition of commitment to the Great Commission, devotion to God’s Word, and being led by the Holy Spirit, First Baptist Church of Central City, KY seeks to be a church that is both culturally relevant and theologically sound – never compromising the things Jesus made essential to His Church in the New Testament.
